Selangor declared Tuesday, 1 September 2026 a special state holiday after the SUKMA XXII closing ceremony at Aneka Walk, SA Sentral. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced it on 24 August with the medal tally still on the board: 101 gold, 73 silver, 71 bronze. That is the state's 10th overall SUKMA title, and it beat a target of 80 golds. Para SUKMA then takes the same host cities from 5 September. What the 1 September holiday actually is
It is a Selangor holiday, not a national one. Banks and state offices in Shah Alam, Petaling, Klang and the rest of the state follow it. Federal offices and schools outside Selangor do not automatically close. Amirudin framed it as thanks to athletes and about 10,000 volunteers. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Raja Muda Tengku Amir Shah were at the Aneka Walk closing when he said it. If you work in Shah Alam and your HR team still has not sent the memo, the Bernama copy from 24 August is the citation.
Aneka Walk in Section 14 is the same civic strip as Dataran Kemerdekaan. The opening on 15 August was a "mini" ceremony at the square. The closing on 24 August was the bigger crowd. For visitors, the square is still the evening lawn it was during Merdeka week. The holiday Monday-into-Tuesday after 31 August means a four-day stretch for anyone stacking National Day and the Selangor day. Roads around Section 14 will not be empty. They never are when the square is lit.
Para SUKMA, 5 to 10 September
Para SUKMA 2026 covers 10 sports and 316 events, with 15 contingents including Brunei. Earlier state briefings had used 5 to 14 September. Trust the current official site, which shortens the window to 5 to 10 September. Venues are spread across Selangor, not only Shah Alam, but the host city branding and many halls still sit here: Setia City Convention Centre, UiTM, Ideal Convention Centre, Selangor Aquatic Centre. Check the daily PDF on selangor2026.com the night before. A spectator without a sport in mind should pick one hall and stay put. Hopping between Setia Alam and UiTM in afternoon rain is a waste of a day.
LRT3 is the new variable. The Shah Alam Line opened in late June. Seksyen 7 Shah Alam station is the i-City walk. For Setia Alam sessions, you still want a car or bus. Do not assume every SUKMA hall is on the rail. The line helps Section 7 and the city centre more than the western industrial edge.
If you are in town and not watching sport
i-City's lights still work as a night add-on after a day session. The June-July LRT3 free-ticket bundle for AI World, SportStars and London Village ended 31 July, so budget for paid tickets again. AEON Mall Shah Alam and Central i-City are the air-con options. The Blue Mosque visitor hours still close around prayer times. Dress for it.
September in Shah Alam is sport, a leftover holiday, and humidity. The fireworks from Merdeka Eve are over. What is left is useful: trains that did not exist last year, a square that knows how to hold a crowd, and a para meet that deserves a full stand, not an empty weekday hall.
